Es gehört zur Einleitung eines Artikels über die Informationsgesellschaft, auf Rasanz, Relevanz und Brisanz der informationstechnologischen Entwicklung hinzuweisen, die alle Erwartungen und Prognosen übertrifft, eine Epochenwende markiert, Lebenswelt und Gesellschaft tiefgreifend verändert, die Menschen des ausgehenden 2. Jahrtausends vor enorme Herausforderungen stellt ... – als ginge es erst darum, ein Problembewußtsein dafür zu begründen. Dabei dürfte offensichtlich sein, daß eine Diskussion dieser Entwicklung notwendig ist. Die Fakten sprechen ja für sich: Nicht nur die real existierenden Informations– und Kommunikationssysteme, auch und besonders die neu entstehenden Möglichkeiten und Formen der Anwendung dieser Technologien überraschen, fordern heraus, überfordern und zeigen zunehmend die Normativität des Faktischen, die in dieser Entwicklung liegt.

It is part of the introduction to an article about the information society to point out the rapid pace, relevance, and explosive nature of information technology development, which exceeds all expectations and prognoses, marks a turning point in history, profoundly changes the lifeworld and society, and presents the people of the late second millennium with enormous challenges... —as if the point were only now to establish an awareness of the problem. Yet it should be obvious that a discussion of this development is necessary. The facts speak for themselves: Not only the already existing information and communication systems, but also and especially the newly emerging possibilities and forms of application of these technologies surprise, challenge, overwhelm, and increasingly demonstrate the normativity of the factual that lies within this development.
